David Hockney
David Hockney OM CH RA (July 9, 1937) is a prominent English painter, draughtsman, printmaker, stage designer, and photographer. Recognized as a key figure in the pop art movement of the 1960s, he is regarded as one of the most influential British artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Hockney has maintained residences and studios in Bridlington and London, along with two properties in California, where he has lived intermittently since 1964—one in the Hollywood Hills and another in Malibu. He also operates an office and stores his archives on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood.
On November 15, 2018, Hockney’s 1972 painting Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) achieved a historic sale at Christie’s auction house in New York City, fetching $90 million (£70 million) and becoming the most expensive artwork by a living artist ever sold at auction. This sale surpassed the previous record held by Jeff Koons’s Balloon Dog (Orange), which sold for $58.4 million in 2013. Hockney retained this record until May 15, 2019, when Koons reclaimed the title with the sale of Rabbit for over $91 million at Christie’s in New York.
