George Condo

After two years at UMass Lowell, Condo relocated to Boston, where he worked in a silk screen shop and joined the proto-synth/punk band The Girls as a bassist. This band included notable figures such as abstract painter Mark Dagley and avant-garde musician Daved Hild. Their sole single, “Jeffrey I Hear You”/”Elephant Man,” was produced by David Thomas of Pere Ubu. Condo’s artistic journey took a pivotal turn in 1979 when he met Jean-Michel Basquiat at a performance of Basquiat’s band, Gray. Subsequently, Condo moved to Ludlow Street in New York City to further his artistic career, eventually becoming a founding member of the punk/blues band Hi Sheriffs of Blue in 1980.

Condo has maintained longstanding relationships with several galleries, including Sprüth Magers since 1984, Simon Lee since 1998, Skarstedt since 2005, and Xavier Hufkens since 2006. In January 2020, he began an exclusive partnership with Hauser & Wirth and Sprüth Magers. His painting Force Field (2010) achieved a record auction price of $6.85 million at Christie’s in Hong Kong in July 2020.
